Pienaar: the Ruin of Durban

The Sharks have managed to slip from dire to worse, winless after 3 games into the new Super 14 season. How has a team laden with Springboks, and serious title contenders the past few years, fallen so far? The answer lies with one man, and one position -- Ruan Pienaar.

It might seem wrong to blame the malaise of a team on one individual, or one position, but I think it's important to look at the history.

In 2007, the Sharks were beaten finalists, but were head-and-shoulders the best team in the competition - only two moments of madness from Francios Steyn saw them snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. Pienaar was at scrumhalf, with Butch James at flyhalf, but it was Pienaar who commanded the team - he was confident, dynamic, and quite possibly the best scrumhalf in the world... or at least 2nd behind Du Preez.

When Butch James left, the interesting experiment of playing Pienaar at flyhalf began... and that's where the decline started. Pienaar has steadily lost confidence with each passing week, and the Sharks have missed his spark. They have become a defensive side, incapable of the superb counter-attacking ability they used to display. The backline has had no impetus for a couple seasons now. Pienaar is unhappy, his confidence in ruins, and he's a shadow of his former self. The time has come to end the experiment, restore him to his chosen position, and rebuild a shattered career.

Peter De Villiers is right, Ruan Pienaar is the Tiger Woods of rugby - right after he crashed his Navigator and got clubbed by his wife... But in all seriousness, he is as important to the Sharks as Du Preez is to the Springboks and Bulls. They are ineffective without him, and as good a player as Kockett is, he is more the Rory Sabbatini of rugby - a good scrapper, but lacking true greatness.

Return Pienaar to scrumhalf - it doesn't even matter who plays flyhalf (as long as its not John Smit looking to extend his career... but that's a different story) - and the Sharks will rise again. Better to be the 2nd best scrumhalf in the world, than a mediocre flyhalf.

Back with a vengeance! Last week, I was only 100 points or so off the leaders... but still a lot of ground to make up. I moved from 34th to 17th position, and will hopefully half that deficit again this week and break into the top 10.

In order to conserve trades, and because I'm pretty happy with my team, I've only made one change this week. The benched De Malmanche is out, and Polatu-Nau is in. He's not a big scorer, but he's certainly consistent - earning 240 both games thus far.

I'm expecting big numbers from my Force and Hurricanes players - both those games should be high scoring affairs - taking on the leaky Chiefs and Lions respectively. Dagg should also post some big numbers against the notoriously porous Cheetahs - though I must admit, they seem to solidified on defense... oh wait, it was probably just the Sharks complete inability to penetrate on attack.

After a disastrous start, my confidence is returning... the shame is subsiding... the arrogant swagger re-emerging... here I come.

With de Malmanche benched (and scoring poorly last week), I replaced him with Paulo who has been a solid earner so far.

I swapped both my locks. Michael Paterson's been playing in the backrow and therefore is likely to earn more points than most locks. Nathan Sharpe's an old TR workhorse and always seems to earn close to 200, which makes him one of the better performers in this lowest scoring of all the positions.

With Spies out, it was an easy choice to swap him for Elsom after Rocky's awesome performance last week. In the other slot, I plumped for Liam Messam, with the expectation that the Chiefs will dominate the injury-ravaged Western Force.

I stuck with Carter, though many clearly didn't seeing how much his price dived this week. He's certainly been underperforming by his own high standards of late, but he's still a class act. Likewise Steyn, unsurprisingly, stays put.

Nonu's getting back to his old point scoring form and up against the leaky Lions this week, he's sure to be among the highest scorers. I swapped Smith for the Highlanders' Michael Hobbs, whose point scoring thus far is in stark contrast to his ridiculously low cost.

In the backs, I sold the injured Sivivatu for his replacement Lelia Masaga, who has regularly been among the best TR performers in previous seasons. Alongside him, is the Hurricane's David Smith, who, like Nonu, will hopefully have a field day in Wellington against the most suicidal team in the competition.

Remember the byes kick in next weekend, so sell your Bulls and Western Force players as soon as this round locks.
